Pine Needle Scale
What is it?
Aphid-like insects that typically produce a hard waxy shell and feed on needles of spruce and pine trees. They reduce vigor of the tree and can cause general decline over time.
What are the signs?
· White dots on needles
· Waxy, White scales
· Needle and branch dieback
Life Cycle
· Scales overwinter on needles
· Eggs hatch in May and June
· Two generations per year
Treatment and Prevention
· Reduce excess watering
· Mulch around the tree
· Foliar or systemic insecticides are available to treat the scale during the spring.
